We did more than making garden rows this past weekend, but one title could not sum up all of the tasks we tackled. I hope you enjoyed the sneak peak at what we plan to plant this year, some of those things are now in the ground! Our plan is ambitious but the first year is about making mistakes, right?
The Planting Report
This weekend we turned the soil in 2 of our garden plots and edged off a third one. We removed a bunch of plants that were growing in the garden (grapes?) and some that were in the one flower bed we are converting to a garden bed.
Once that was settled we started planting! We planted kale and swiss chard in the garden and in the smaller side plot. I promise one day I’ll share a more visual graphic of the beds in our back yard. We also planted radishes and onions in the garden. Finally, I started a small pot with oregano in it.
The Growing Report
The rhubarb is coming in hot! I swear every time I go to that side of the house a new patch is peaking out of the ground. I’ll have enough for a crumble in no time. Also, a few new garlic scapes are starting to poke out of the ground.
The Harvest Report
We harvested our first batch of chives! They were wonderful and I can’t wait to start experimenting with them a bit more. I have some ideas that we will be testing for an upcoming River City Cookery post, so stay tuned.
In other exciting news…I can’t believe I forgot to mention that we’ve begun composting! Our home had a compost in the back yard when we moved in, but things have been so wild for is since then that we haven’t had a chance to set up a system that works for us. So far it’s going really well but I’m looking for tips on buying a countertop collector so that we don’t have to run outside 24/7!
Let’s chat – Have you harvested anything yet? Anyone else checking their plots every day just waiting for something to emerge?
