Gardening is really testing my patience. Not a whole lot has grown in the past week – which is to be expected – but I wish I had an abundance of new sprouts growing! Side note: we do have an abundance of new weeds sprouting and maybe even some bamboo, so I guess there’s that.
The Planting Report
We planted a few more herbs this past weekend. Italian parsley was planted in the ground beside our compost bin. This is a new bed and some sort of ground cover plant has taken over the area. I did my best at clearing some of it out, but it was EVERYWHERE. We’ll be planing tomatoes here after May long weekend so I hope to have it fully cleaned up by then. We also planted some basil in a small pot that I’ve been keeping inside.
The Growing Report
Focusing on the good: we have radishes (below)!! According to my schedule they should be ready for harvest by the end of June. Several garlic scapes are now coming up and one shallot has emerged. We may also have some kale and/or Swiss chard but I can’t tell if it’s weeds or not. We have ONE onion so far but I’m hopeful more will emerge in the next few days.
The rhubarb has gotten so big! I wouldn’t be surprised if I can harvest some by the end of the weekend. Yes, those are my purple gardening crocs.
Interestingly, I think we have some backyard garden bamboo growing. It looks suspiciously like bamboo shoots and Mr. A said he thought he saw fully grown bamboo in there last fall. My question for you is what should I do with it? It’s randomly spread out and the roots are really deep and hardy – can I remove it? Will it keep coming back?
The Harvest Report
I harvested some more chives (which are already trying to seed on me!). We used them for a delicious recipe we were testing for River City Cookery.
We’ll be away this coming up weekend so we don’t have any planting planned but I hope we’ll have some kale and Swiss chard sprouting by then! I seriously cannot wait to harvest my own for salads and sautés!
Let’s chat – How’s your garden coming along? Have you ever seen bamboo growing in a garden in Winnipeg before!? How should I get rid of it?
