I LOVE Spring.
Ok, I love spring when the weather cooperates. Ahem, I’m talking about you – snow on May 12th.
When the weather is nice I want to do all the things outside – eat, drink coffee, sit, dance, you name it. Which is exactly why when spring arrives, and all the way until the air becomes too cold to breathe, I also want to take my workouts outside. I need to bust free from stale indoor air and be free in the wilderness. Dramatic, maybe? But you would understand if you’ve survived a Winnipeg winter.
Today I’m sharing 4 awesome ways to take your workout outside!
Hit the (Urban) Trails
Many cities have great networks of bike and running paths – have you explored yours? Head out for a bike or a jog in your city or town and see what you can find! Bonus points if you also work in a picnic or a game of frisbee.
Hit the Trails
One of my favourite outdoor activities is hiking. I really enjoy exploring new trails and new parts of the province that I haven’t been to yet. When we have lots of time we make a weekend trip out of it (camping of course!) otherwise we stick to parks closer to the city. PSA: If you’re deathly scared of bears don’t leave home without your bare mace, actually you should never leave home without bear mace. Fortunately, the worst I’ve come across was a couple of wild pheasants however it was QUITE a traumatic experience, just ask my boyfriend…
Outdoor Fitness Classes
Outdoor fitness classes are an AWESOME idea and are probably happening in a city near you. If you’re in Winnipeg, the Downtown Winnipeg Biz puts on some Zumba/yoga/etc classes throughout the summer (they also have bike tours – how cool!). If there aren’t any classes popping up near you, create your own! Hit up pinterest for some body weight workouts, grab a bud and work it out in a local park (or your backyard!).
I know you’ve heard me talk about active commuting before, but if I haven’t convinced you perhaps the nice weather will? Bike, walk, jog, skateboard, or canoe (very possible if you live in a city on water – ha) to work and enjoy the warmer temperatures while you do.
But what if the weather ruins your plans? Or you get snow in May? (yes, I will never get over that)
Never fear, just have a back up plan! I will be the first person to tell you that I’m a fair weathered outdoor activity-goer but I always have a backup plan if the weather goes sour. My favourite go-to’s are group fitness classes at GoodLife Fitness (BodyPump!), at home body weight workouts (when I reaaaalllly don’t want to leave the house), or a yoga class!
